In 2018, 20th Century Fox released the film adaptation of author Angie Thomas’ young adult coming-of-age novel The Hate U Give. Despite the book’s massive popularity—it sat at number one on the New York Times’ bestseller list for nearly a full year—the film version barely managed to outgross its $23 million budget. Coupled with the current state of the post-pandemic theatrical market, it’s doubly unsurprising that the movie based on Thomas’ followup novel, On the Come Up, is headed straight to streaming.
Arriving on Sept. 23, the film follows Bri (Jamila C. Gray), a 16-year-old aspiring rapper and daughter of a hip-hop legend doing her best to live up to his legacy. Originally set to be shepherded by The Hate U Give director George Tillman, Jr., it was ultimately brought to the small screen by actress Sanaa Lathan, making her directorial debut.

Here’s everything else arriving on the streamer in September, including the new season of The Good Fight (Sept. 8) and a concert tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins (Sept. 3).
